74' - Alumni: Kelly Gray (Rob Baarts)
85' - Alumni: Darren Sawatzky (Brian Winters)

Kelly Gray and Darren Sawatzky each scored second-half goals as the University of Portland alumni beat the current squad 2-0 in an exhibition played Saturday at Merlo Field. Rob Baarts and Brian Winters assisted on the goals.

Early in the match, it was the Alumni that were keeping control of the ball, giving a squad of mostly Pilot reserves some lessons in ball control. In the 5th minute, the Alumni team had the first scoring chance of the match when a cross from Steven Elliott to Jeff Betts had the striker free at the far post, but he was not able to get enough of his foot onto the ball and it went wide right. Two minutes later, the Pilots had their first good chance when Mario Picarelli had a good look at goal from the top of the box, but hit the shot wide to the left. One minute after this, current Chicago Fire player Kelly Gray made a short run into the box, but his shot was saved by Pilots goalkeeper Justin Carter.

In the 13th minute, Gray had another good chance to score, but his header from near the spot went just wide right. In the 19th, Sheldin Maistry had a good look at the Alumni goal from just beyond the top of the box, but his shot was over the bar. Three minutes later, current Seattle Sounder Darren Sawatzky played a nice through ball into the run of Portland Timber Brian Winters as he ran into the box, but his attempt to beat Carter to the near side went wide right.

In the 32nd minute, a through ball from current Pilot Ryan Domingo to Maistry looked dangerous until Alumni goalkeeper Brian Casola smothered the ball at the top of the box. The Pilots had their best chance of the first half in the 37th minute when a cross from Maistry found Josh Simpson open in the box, but his header was barely tipped over the bar by Casola. In the 40th minute, Alumnus Joey Leonetti turned on the ball and shot from 15 yards out, but his shot was blocked by a Pilots defender. One minute later, off a corner kick, current Pilot Patrick Mooney had a good chance to score on a header but hit it wide left. In the 44th minute, Mooney made a run down the right side put pushed his shot across the face of the goal and wide left. As time ran out, Gray had one last good chance for the Alumni team as he made a run into the box, but his shot went just wide right and the half ended scoreless.

At the start of the second half, the current Pilots began to push their midfielders further forward, attempting to apply more pressure to the Alumni defense. Just three minutes into the 2nd half, a Josh Brown header appeared headed towards net until it was blocked wide by current Portland Timber Scott Benedetti. In the 52nd minute, a cross from current Seattle Sounder Andrew Gregor to Jeff Betts had the Alumni stiker in alone, but Carter charged off his line and saved. Two minutes later, Pilots defender Brian Cotlove had good look at goal from 20 yards out, but put his shot over the bar. Four minutes later, Cotlove had another good chance as he made a run into the Alumni box, but his shot was saved by Casola as he came off his line. Just one minute later, Maistry had a similar chance, but once again Casola was up to it, charging the shot to make a point-blank save.

This Darren Sawatzky shot made it 2-0 Alumni

In the 68th minute, each team's #12 put shots over the bar, first by Benedetti for the alumni team, then by Maistry for the current squad. In the 70th minute, a great through ball into the run of Gray had the Alumni team threatening to break the scoreless match, but Gray had a bad touch on the ball as he moved into the box, and Carter was able to smother the ball before Gray could catch up to the free ball. Two minutes later, a through ball ahead of Alumnus Brandon Henley appared to have him clear of the last defender, but Carter charged a full 20 yards out of his box and collided with Henley and ended the attack. The Alumni were unable to take advantage of the ensuing free kick.

But the scoreless drought finally ended in the 74th minute when a diagonal ball from Rob Baarts into the run of Gray had the 2001 Alumnus in alone, and he blasted the ball by Carter from 15 yards out at an angle, and the Alumni had taken a 1-0 lead. In the 80th minute, Gregor had a good chance from 20 yards out after a corner kick, but his shot was saved wide by a diving Carter.

But with five minutes left in the match, the Alumni team would use the same type of setup to score, this time from Winters into the run of Sawatzky, and the 1994 graduate blasted a low shot from an angle that slipped into the left side of the net, and the Alumni had doubled their lead to 2-0. The current Pilots squad had one more good chance in the 88th minute when John Domingo made a run into the box and hit a hard shot from 15 yards out, but the shot was right into Casola's chest, and as the whistle blew, the Alumni team had used the diagonal run from the right side twice to earn a 2-0 win.
